Quick Tips for Paper Piecing

Paper piecing has many great benefits, yet some people are discouraged by the issue of time. I have found these tips to help save time when paper piecing.

  1. When I make a paper piecing, I have found that the process is faster if I trace all of the parts and then cut them out.  This way it is easier to keep track of the pieces and, I am able to trace and cut them out all at the same time.
  2. I find that if I will make more than one of the same items at the same time it saves me time.  For instance, I will create many thank you cards all at once, so when I need to have one to put with a gift, I don’t have to pull everything out, get set up and make one single item.  Not only do I have the pattern cut out, I can use the same colors of card stock for each card.
  3. When you are printing the patterns out on cardstock, look at the pattern and decide which color is dominant in the pattern.  For example, if you are creating a person, many of the pieces are skin colored.  I will then print out the pattern on skin colored paper.  I will then trace the rest of the patterns on the color they need to be.  If you are creating the duck you can print the pattern on yellow, and then trace the beak on orange.
  4. When the pattern has a shape that is about the same size as a punch, I will use the punch instead of tracing the item and cutting it out.  I will also use a punch of different sizes and shapes to make the insides of letterings.  For example, the inside of a B or a P.  This is much easier than trying to cut the middle out of a letter and it looks better too.
  5. If I am really in a hurry, I will make copies of my original paper piecing on white paper or cardstock and just cut the whole thing out. It still has a neat paper-piecing look to it, but didn’t take much time.  You can also print out the images in the site by right clicking on the picture and coping it into a document them printing it out.
These are just a few tricks I use in order to speed up the paper piecing process.  Yes, stickers and cutouts can be much quicker, but how much more impressive and eye catching is something that matches your pictures more perfectly and stands out further on the page.  It is a look you cannot get any other way.  Remember, beauty takes a little time, and it is worth it.  Also, enjoy the process!
